The Middle Years Programme (MYP)

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) in the International Baccalaureate (IB) is an educational programme for 6th to 10th grade students, from ages 11 to 16.

The Middle Years Programme is a framework catering to young adults and is designed to make practical connections between what the students study and the real world. Thus, preparing them for success in both academics and their chosen careers. The MYP aims to develop active learners and internationally minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The programme empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of significance locally, nationally and globally. The result is young people who are creative, critical and reflective thinkers.

MYP Curriculum Framework

The Middle Years Programme comprises 8 subject groups that impart holistic development to the students pursuing the programme.

The 8 subject groups are:

Mathematics

Language & Literature

Arts

Language Acquisition

Sciences

Individuals  & Societies

Design

Physical & Health Education

The importance of multilingualism in the IB can be seen in the offering of two language courses in the form of Language and Literature and Language Acquisition. While the subject groups naturally comprise mathematics and sciences, equal importance is given to the arts and physical and health education, making it a well rounded curriculum. The focus of these subject groups is the development of knowledge, conceptual understanding and skills essential for academic and real life success of a student.

Education must be multidimensional. Manpreet Kaur, Secondary Principal

The MYP is a framework, which means it can support content from various curricula and disciplines. The component that makes the framework unique are the Approaches to Teaching and Learning that the students are exposed to.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:

The inquiry based approach of the IB helps students to learn skills and concepts in contexts connected to their real life. This makes learning engaging and meaningful for the students and enriching for the teachers. A unifying thread throughout all MYP subject groups, approaches to learning (ATL) provide the foundation for independent learning and encourage the application of their knowledge and skills in unfamiliar contexts. Developing and applying these social, thinking, research, communication and self management skills helps students learn how to learn.

Stonehill International School

The Middle Years Programme at Stonehill

Stonehill International School, one of the best international schools in Bangalore, has been committed to the IB philosophy right from its inception. It has been offering the Middle Years Programme since it opened its doors in 2008. Students from more than 30 different countries study English as Language and Literature and choose between French, Hindi, Mandarin and Spanish for Language Acquisition. Students in grade 9 (M4) and grade 10(M5) also have an opportunity to pursue their mother tongue as a self taught Language and Literature course if supported by a tutor conversant with that particular language.

Students from Grade 6 (M1) to Grade 8 (M3) will undertake the study of all 8 subject groups. The arts are offered as trimester courses to provide exposure in both, visual and performing arts.  Students will pursue Physical and Health Education as a part of their course till the end of the Middle Years Programme i.e Grade 10 ( M5).

In order to bring curricular flexibility the students are given the following choices in Grade 9 (M4)  and Grade 10 (M5). Students can pick up one or two science subjects from Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Students can pick one or two subjects from the Group of Visual Arts, Drama, Music, Product Design and Digital Design. This gives students the opportunity to pursue subjects that will align with their career paths. The career counsellor is involved in all these conversations and helps students make an informed decision.  Under some circumstances, it may be possible for students to take all three sciences in Grade 9 (M4) and Grade 10 (M5).

Stonehill International School is a day and boarding school in Bangalore that offers full time and weekly boarding options, starting from grade 6 onwards.
