From Leading to Learning: A Break Well Spent

By Padma Sekar
P7 Homeroom Teacher

Over the break, I had the privilege of facilitating a two-part workshop series called “Planning Lessons through the Inquiry Cycle” for The Collaborative Learning Studio, organised by Adhyayan Quality Education Services. It was a truly energising experience — not just because I got to share strategies I care deeply about, but because it reminded me how powerful learning becomes when we do it together.

During the sessions, we unpacked the different types and stages of inquiry, co-constructed lesson plans, and explored how open-ended questions and student-led investigations can shift the energy in a classroom — making space for curiosity, voice, and ownership. I drew on ideas from inspiring educators like Kath Murdoch and Trevor MacKenzie, aiming to keep things both grounded and practical — strategies that teachers could actually take back and try out.

What meant the most to me was the feedback from participants. Their reflections were thoughtful and encouraging. Many said they felt more confident and motivated to bring inquiry into their classrooms. They appreciated how real and doable the strategies were — especially tools like the “Excavation Activity,” and the chance to explore inquiry in a way that was hands-on and collaborative. A few even rated the session a full 5 out of 5, which I’ll admit made me smile!

Facilitating this space gave me so much to reflect on. It reminded me that professional development is just as meaningful for the person leading it. It pushes you to clarify your own thinking, listen closely, and stay open to learning from the group. I walked away with new ideas, fresh energy, and a deeper appreciation for the community of educators I get to learn with.

I don’t think we need to wait until we feel like ‘experts’ to share what we know. Sometimes, the best learning happens when we take a risk, start a conversation, and grow together.

Professional development isn’t just about delivering content — it’s about listening, reflecting, and growing together.

Since the release of ChatGPT, I’ve been fascinated by the power of AI and how it can support us in our everyday lives. I’ve also quickly realised that we need to be self-disciplined to avoid becoming slaves of AI.

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the PYP SAIBSA 2025 Job-Alike Sessions at Treamis School on 29th November. The open sign-up encouraged me to participate, and discovering how IB educators come together to learn and grow made the experience truly meaningful. 11 of us attended the event from the Primary team, Stonehill International School.
